Why people get stuck in the past, and how to move on?

Experiences if too painful are pushed in to the unconscious naturally, but only to be purged out later in life to unload it's burden but it's not easy.

So, the unconscious or the shadow purge stuff out into the consciousness only when its possible for the person to bear the difficulty of the subjective experience.

Our unconscious even influence our choices to make us go through the same experiences, and it keep making us do that until we are fully conscious of the subjective aspect of the past experiences, or fully feel the emotional content of the experience with conscious awareness ...

Once the subjective content is fully purged out into our conscious awareness, our unconscious no more push to make us repeat the experience, at least on a subjective level ... we move on and no more remain stuck in the past ...

The ego though always try to counter the tendency of the unconscious to keep the subjective material in the shadow, but conscious-will can be used to ask the ego to step aside so that purging happens uninterrupted ...

If it's too much to handle in one go then purging out will happen in stages ...
