The following documentary is dedicated to all the NGOs who are very much concerned about the state of prostitutes or sex workers, for that matter, in Pakistan; and the best they do is to educate them how to do their job safely, i.e. to keep themselves away from STDs. Please note that safe here doesn't imply safety from the physical and psychological abuse any sex worker faces nearly every day.
Furthermore on 1st Dec 2009, Mirza Aleem Baig, who runs a UN funded charity program in Karachi, is reported to have said “So far we have provided hundreds of thousands of condoms to sex workers in the last two years, which have saved them from being infected with the lethal virus,”(Dawn, 1st Dec 2009)
In the same context, on 10th July 2009, "The female workers were brought to the workshop entitled ‘Skill building workshop on HIV and sex works’ with the support of an NGO and contraceptive marketers, said an organiser, adding that there was a plan to bring the female sex workers operating from kothis, bungalows and those giving services on call to such a forum in the future. At the inaugural session, the participants were told that since the late 1980s a large proportion of HIV cases had been detected in men, particularly those who had worked abroad." WTF ... No matter how hard I try, I just kind find an answer to a simple question, "if these NGOs are so concerned then why the hell they don't just help these poor women to establish an alternate source of income and live a honorable life?
Any one who thinks that these women are in this profession by choice and don't want's to leave it then please watch this documentary. If you belongs to an NGO, then please try something to give these women a life, not a regular supply of condoms, for Gods sake .... If not, then please send this post to any NGOs member / owner you may know.
"Not For Sale" was produced by the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) and
the European Women's Lobby (EWL) in 2006. This documentary by filmmaker Marie Vermeiren gives voice to five survivors of prostitution, and also the UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking, Ministers of the European Parliament and representatives from CATW and EWL. Understanding that prostitution is violence against women, the film articulates the links between prostitution and trafficking. Survivors come out strongly against decriminalization or legalization of prostitution, and point out the necessity for challenging men's demand for prostitution.
This short film (approx 25 minutes) is an excellent introduction to how prostitution works, as well as for those who want a deeper understanding of what prostitution is really like, from the perspective of survivors and advocates for alternatives to prostitution.
what a silly post. the money for ngos is limited and the scale huge, the only way to get women out of this trade is if the government welfare system worked. so the ngos are doing at least one quick fix which is provide health safety, and because the debilitating nature of aids and the terms invalids it can create, this is cost effective in a imperfect situation.
ReplyDeletesave your moral outrage for actually helping them, not criticizing the few who can do what they can within their resources.
My dear Brother or Sister ... Money is not a problem when you have a cause, there are many people in Pakistan who are willing spent millions only if they see a cause ... if any of these NGOs wants to do so, they can easily get loads of money not only from with the country but also from outside. Best regards.
ReplyDeleteIf NGO's specially working for women rights have some thing in their heart, they will not remain silent over Aafia case, and will do something they did for Fake Sawat Girl Video... it clearly exposes, the role of NGO's working in Pakistan
ReplyDeleteSallam Br/Sis,
ReplyDeleterecently I opted to get newsletter from Critic Magazine and it is doing a wonderful job. But today when I got this, Women for not sale, believe me I could not eat before finishing this video. I am surprised that people are doing this. We all must unite against it and try to stop it.
As an individual and an Islamic publisher I would like to offer my services for this noble cause and I will congratulate Critic Magazine for bringing us the truth about our surroundings.
